What Goes Into a China Deck

Footings four feet down. Every post below frost, set with helical piles on most jobs so the ground stays intact.
Erosion control while we work. Lake-adjacent permits routinely carry phosphorus and erosion conditions, and we build to them rather than around them.
Framing. Pressure-treated and oversized, joists at 16 inches on center and tightened to 12 under PVC.
Joist tape on every joist. The top edge is where a frame begins to rot, and it is the one surface nobody ever looks at.
Decking. TimberTech and AZEK lead here, with pressure-treated when the budget decides and Trex only to match an existing run.
Railing and stairs. Westbury aluminum by default, cable infill where the water view matters more than the railing does.

A wood deck is finished at 20 years. The giveaway is often a few dangerous boards that have already been replaced.

Composite decking with composite railing starts at $15,500. Use those figures to size up the project, not price it. They come from hundreds of quotes, and yours may land above or below them once the details are on paper. China costs more than our Augusta base because distance and access consume crew time before building starts. And scale works backward. Small decks cost more per square foot than large ones. Footings are close to a fixed cost, so an 8x12 deck with stairs lands around $9,800. A 12x16 costs roughly $1,000 more for nearly twice the deck.
