What a kitchen remodel costs with Newman Homes in Central Maine, sorted into five bands from a cosmetic refresh up to a full layout change with a wall taken out.
There is no price per square foot on this page and there will not be one. Kitchen cost is driven by cabinet run, appliance count, and how much plumbing and electrical has to move. None of those scale with floor area, so a per-foot number would be a guess dressed up as a rate.
The number to leave with is the floor: $28,000. Below that you are looking at a partial update rather than a kitchen remodel, and Newman Homes would rather say so than write a price it cannot build to.
What Belongs in the Contract
Maine has no state licensing standard for remodeling contractors. Electrical and plumbing work does require a state credential.
Your contractor should hold one you can look up.

Each of the five figures is a qualifying range averaged across hundreds of estimates. Real kitchens land near a band, rarely right on it. The $28,000 floor is firm. Below that, you’re looking at a partial update instead of a kitchen remodel. We’d rather say so than publish a figure we cannot deliver. There is no kitchen price per square foot, and we will not publish one. Cabinet run and appliance count drive cost. So does the amount of plumbing or electrical work that moves. How Kitchen Remodeling Runs
Measure and look underneath.
The panel, the plumbing, the floor level, and what is above the wall you want opened.
Design and cabinet selection.
Layout first, then the box tier, then everything else. Design practice standards are published by the national kitchen and bath association.
An itemized contract.
Cabinets, counters, appliances, plumbing, electrical, flooring, and allowances, each on its own line.
Demolition and structure.
Anything touching the frame happens first, with temporary support in before a wall comes out.
Rough mechanicals, inspection, then close in.
Wiring and plumbing get inspected before board goes on.
Cabinets, counters, tile, trim.
Counters template after cabinets are set, which is why there is a gap in the middle of the schedule.
Punch list and warranty.
Written, worked to zero, then 2 years of workmanship coverage.
What Moves the Number
Cabinets are the single biggest line and the main thing you control. Stock, semi-custom, and custom is a real ladder, and moving up one rung changes the total more than any counter material will.
Whether the sink and range stay put. Moving plumbing and gas is the expensive change. Moving cabinets is not.
Whether the wall somebody wants removed is carrying the floor above it. A structural opening means a beam, posts, and a load path down to the foundation, and that is the jump from the $60,000 band to the $85,000 one.
What the electrical service can support. A modern kitchen needs dedicated circuits, and pre-1960 houses in this service area routinely still have knob-and-tube wiring and an undersized panel.
Below the five bands are the older-house problems we see constantly here. Pre-1900 houses often have out-of-level floors.
Layered flooring may bring lead or asbestos considerations, while sink walls can hide subfloor rot. Existing openings may not fit new appliances.
Rural lots add questions about well water chemistry. And a dishwasher or disposal can strain a septic system that never served either one.
